In a thrilling all-Canadian showdown on Wednesday, Carson Branstine triumphed over Bianca Andreescu with a score of 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 during the second round of Wimbledon qualifiers.
The 24-year-old Branstine, hailing from California but representing Canada due to her Toronto roots, showcased impressive skill after a stunning first-round victory against top seed and French Open semifinalist Lois Boisson.
Struggling with her serve, Andreescu from Mississauga, Ont., managed to win only 57% of her first-serve points and recorded three aces, while Branstine dominated with six.
Branstine, who kickstarted her grass season with a hard-fought WTA Tour main-draw win in the Netherlands earlier this month, is now set to face Cyprus’s Raluca Serban, with a coveted spot in the Wimbledon main draw at stake.
In other news, Alexis Galarneau from Laval, Quebec, faced defeat in his second-round men’s qualifier, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Britain’s Oliver Tarvet.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Victoria Mboko from Toronto was scheduled to compete against Switzerland’s Valentina Ryser later in the day.
