Belinda Bencic triumphantly navigated a match against a familiar adversary, marking her inaugural major victory as a mother.

The gold medalist from the 2020 Olympics showcased her skill by defeating 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 6-3, 7-6(6), advancing to the second round of the Australian Open—nine years after her previous run in Melbourne.

Following her victory, Bencic candidly shared her thoughts about facing the powerful Ostapenko, likening it to a tense game of Russian roulette: each shot carries the potential for disaster.

“Playing against her can feel a bit like a game of Russian roulette,” Bencic remarked with a smile. “At times, it seems like you’re just a spectator on your own side of the court.”

“I aimed to remain consistent and resilient during crucial moments. I’m thrilled that my efforts paid off today. It’s a great feeling to win and look forward to another match.”

As Ostapenko struggled with her shots, Bencic cleverly allowed her the space to falter. Ostapenko recorded 10 double faults along with 55 unforced errors, in contrast to Bencic’s 26.

With her current ranking at No. 421—400 spots up from where she was last January—Bencic expressed satisfaction with her return to tennis following maternity leave, which began in October after welcoming her daughter Bella on April 23rd.

“Sometimes, it feels as though the match dynamics are unpredictable,” Bencic revealed. “You never know when she might land a winner or miss the target. I’m definitely pleased with the direction my results are heading. Each day in practice, I’m feeling stronger and more prepared. It’s gratifying to see the fruits of my labor in my comeback so far.”

Bencic reflects on the gifts motherhood has brought her: the joy of her daughter Bella, a fresh perspective on life beyond tennis, and the patience to endure challenging moments.

“I don’t know if it’s about finding extra motivation. I’ve always had that drive to compete,” Bencic explained to reporters. “I play this game for myself, but I feel like it allows me to adopt a more relaxed attitude, knowing there are things in life that hold greater importance than tennis.”

“At times, I have placed too much pressure on myself. Now, it feels a bit less burdensome to compete because I acknowledge that my life encompasses much more than just the sport.”

Next up, Bencic will take on 25-year-old Suzan Lamens in the following round.
