The spotlight dims on Spanish talent as icons step back from Madrid’s Magic Box.

Paula Badosa has officially withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open, grappling with a persistent back issue.

The world-ranked No. 9 shared her news on social media just before her anticipated match against Veronika Kudermetova.

“Hi everyone, I regret to inform you that I won’t be participating in the Madrid Open this year,” Badosa wrote. “I tried every possible option up until the last moment because I’m so eager to compete at home, but the injury is quite challenging.”

“I hope to be back at 100% soon. Sending love, Paula.”

Badosa’s exit comes shortly after two-time Madrid champion Carlos Alcaraz withdrew due to injury as well.

Badosa’s back troubles have restricted her to just 22 matches this season.

The 27-year-old athlete appeared to worsen her condition during her Miami Open victory over Clara Tauson, leading to her withdrawal before a scheduled match against the young Filipina talent Alexandra Eala. She has not competed since.
