Canadian athletes are shining brightly in the early stages of the grass-court season!
On Thursday, Bianca Andreescu delivered an impressive performance, sweeping past New Zealand’s No. 7 seed, Lulu Sun, with a score of 6-0, 6-4 during the second round of the Libema Open.
The Mississauga, Ontario native showed her resilience by saving all four break points she encountered, while successfully breaking Sun’s serve four times out of seven opportunities. Andreescu is set to face Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse next on Friday.
Ruse secured her spot in the next round with a victory over Canada’s Carson Branstine, winning 6-4, 6-3. Branstine made headlines by defeating the tournament’s top seed, Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, just one day earlier, marking her first career main-draw win at the WTA Tour level.
This match was the first encounter between Andreescu and Sun on the WTA Tour.
Previously, Andreescu claimed victory against Taiwan’s Joanna Garland with a score of 6-1, 6-3 in the Round of 32.
After facing disappointment in the qualifiers at the French Open last month, Andreescu’s recent win has brought her total to six main-draw victories in 2025.
Meanwhile, Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarterfinals of the Boss Open in Stuttgart, Germany, after defeating France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
Seeded fourth in Stuttgart, Auger-Aliassime capitalized on three out of four break-point opportunities in his solid win. Next up for him is a match against 17-year-old German wild-card, Justin Engel, on Friday.
