In an electrifying second-round match at the Tiriac Open presented by UniCredit Bank, World No. 189 Alex Molcan delivered a stunning performance, defeating top seed Gabriel Diallo with a decisive score of 6-2, 6-2.

Once peaking at No. 38 in the PIF ATP Rankings back in May 2022, the 28-year-old Slovak—who clinched two ATP Challenger titles in 2025—proved he still has what it takes. He grounded down Canadian Diallo in a swift 88 minutes, following up on his earlier victory over Matteo Arnaldi.

“I am extremely pleased,” stated Molcan. “I anticipated a challenging match since he is an exceptional player. However, I recognized it was his first match on clay this year, so I concentrated on my performance. I knew he might find it tough, and I managed to execute my game plan effectively. I’m thrilled with how I played today.”

Diallo, who reached the quarter-finals on clay in Madrid last year, is facing a tough season, standing at 5-9 according to the Infoys ATP Win/Loss Index.

This marks Molcan’s return to a tour-level event’s main draw for the first time since 2024. His next challenge will be against Mariano Navone, who secured his quarter-final spot after defeating Elmer Moller with a score of 6-2, 6-1. Navone, a former Bucharest finalist, is advancing to his first tour-level quarter-final since Buenos Aires in February 2025.

In other matches, Damir Dzumhur’s impressive performance set him up for a quarter-final clash with Botic van de Zandschulp. Dzumhur pulled off a significant upset by defeating fourth seed Nuno Borges 7-6(1), 6-4, ending an 11-match losing streak against Top 50 players.

Dutch star Van de Zandschulp advanced to his second tour-level quarter-final of the season, overcoming Alexander Shevchenko with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-1. This victory also leveled their Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 1-1.
