Following his intense three-set battle with Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday night at the Nitto ATP Finals, Alex de Minaur expressed his frustration candidly. The Australian, who served for victory at 5-4 in the final set, ultimately faced a 5-7, 6-3, 5-7 defeat, leaving him with a record of 0-2 in the Jimmy Connors group.
“If I’m serious about advancing my career, I simply cannot afford to lose matches like this,” de Minaur stated in his post-match interview. “It feels like I’ve faced far too many losses this year. Mentally, it’s becoming overwhelming.”
At just 26, de Minaur is now 0-5 across two appearances at this elite year-end event. Last month, he fell to Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals in Paris and lost a decisive match to world No. 2 Jannik Sinner in Beijing. Despite enjoying a career-high 55 tour victories in 2025, as per the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, he has suffered eight defeats in deciding sets, including against Musetti in the Monte-Carlo semi-finals.
“I have to find a way to win these tight matches. If I don’t, it’s going to consume me,” de Minaur insisted. “I need to address this issue sooner rather than later. I can’t keep enduring losses like this one.”
The 2025 Washington champion will next face Taylor Fritz in his final round-robin duel on Thursday, with the possibility of still advancing to the semi-finals.
