Carlos Alcaraz and Joao Fonseca are known for their explosive shots, but the electric atmosphere at the Miami Open presented by Itau made for an extraordinary backdrop on Friday night.
In front of a lively audience, Alcaraz showcased his composure, overcoming Fonseca with a decisive 6-4, 6-4 victory in their inaugural encounter on the Lexus ATP Head2Head circuit. While the enthusiastic Brazilian fans rallied behind Fonseca, the world No. 1’s experience proved invaluable in countering the spirited challenge presented by the young prospect.
“I felt strong during crucial moments,” reflected Alcaraz. “From the first point to the last, I maintained my focus knowing how talented Joao is.” The ace managed to stave off all three break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
“I’m thrilled to have stayed calm and positive throughout. My serve was lethal today, which really played to my advantage,” he added.
For Fonseca, this match marked another tough loss, following his recent challenge against Jannik Sinner in Indian Wells. Despite the setback, both encounters have highlighted Fonseca’s potential to rise to the top of the PIF ATP Rankings in the coming years.
“Battling with us offers valuable insights for him and his team on what to focus on next,” said Alcaraz, reminiscing about his initial match against Rafael Nadal in Madrid 2021. “Joao has incredible shots and room for growth, but I have no doubt he will excel. Competing against the No. 1 and No. 2 in back-to-back tournaments is a fantastic opportunity for him.”

After his first loss of the season to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semifinals, Alcaraz bounced back, bringing his season tally to 17-1, and an impressive 73-6 since his unexpected defeat by David Goffin last year in Miami. The 22-year-old has reached at least the semifinals in 13 of his last 14 tournaments, and remains undefeated (13-0) against younger competitors on the ATP Tour.
In an electrifying atmosphere, Alcaraz effectively neutralized Fonseca’s powerful play by asserting control over the court and securing a striking 80% win rate on his first serves (35/44). Fonseca struggled to convert break opportunities; he didn’t manage a single forehand winner in the first set.
Alcaraz took charge in the second set from the get-go, executing a backhand lob followed by a straight-down-the-line winner and ultimately breaking serve on his third attempt. Fonseca did find chances to break in subsequent games, but Alcaraz held firm during pivotal moments.
Next on the horizon for the top seed is a third-round duel against Sebastian Korda. The 32nd-seeded American secured his spot by dominating Camilo Ugo Carabelli with a 6-0, 6-3 score earlier that day.
