Unfortunately, Canadians Stacey Fung and Carol Zhao fell short in their quest to make it to the National Bank Open main draw.
In a tough match, Fung was defeated in the second round of women’s singles qualifying by top qualifier Katie Volynets from the United States, with a score of 6-1, 6-3 at Sobeys Stadium.
Despite her efforts, Fung, a 27-year-old hailing from Vancouver, struggled with her first serve, winning only seven out of 32 points and conceding eight of nine break points.
Similarly, Zhao, from Richmond Hill, Ont., suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Ashlyn Krueger from the United States, facing challenges with 13 double faults and winning just 30% of the points on her first serve.
On a brighter note, Zhao, aged 29, managed to secure a victory against Kristina Mladenovic of France in the first round after replacing Hailey Baptiste as an alternate due to travel issues.
As for the players already in the NBO main draw, fans can look forward to seeing Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, and Marina Stakusic compete as the tournament kicks off on Tuesday.
