Rising star Tien has made an impressive journey to the quarterfinals of the men’s singles event at the National Bank Open, presented by Rogers.
The 20-year-old American triumphed over Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante with a score of 6-4, 6-4 during Sunday’s showdown at IGA Stadium.
While Tirante served up seven aces compared to Tien’s two in this thrilling Round of 16 clash, it was Tien’s tenacity that shone through.
Tien converted 4 out of 12 break points, outpacing Tirante, who managed to secure just 2 out of 10.
In another highlight of the evening, defending champion Ben Shelton is set to face Joao Fonseca in one of the standout matches.
As the fifth seed, Shelton stands as the highest-ranked competitor remaining in the men’s draw.
Earlier in the day, Spain’s Daniel Merida Aguilar claimed victory over Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 finish.
