CINCINNATI — On Tuesday, Carlos Alcaraz announced his withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open due to an ongoing right wrist injury that has kept him off the court since April.
The talented Spaniard, currently ranked No. 2, had aimed to defend his title at this prestigious hard-court event, which serves as a vital lead-up to the U.S. Open.
“We recognize that Carlos is doing everything in his power to return to competitive play as swiftly as possible,” stated tournament director Bob Moran. “We wish him a smooth recovery and eagerly anticipate his return to Cincinnati in the future.”
Alcaraz’s last appearance was at the Barcelona Open; since then, he has missed the French Open along with the entire grass-court season, including Wimbledon.
He is still slated to compete in the U.S. Open as the reigning champion. Recent updates on social media have featured the seven-time Grand Slam winner training on the practice courts, leading to hopes that he would be fit for the Cincinnati event starting on August 11.
