On Sunday, Jannik Sinner clinched victory in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon, showcasing his prowess by defeating Alexander Zverev with scores of 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 on the iconic Centre Court.

This triumph marks the 24-year-old Italian’s fifth Grand Slam singles title, positioning him as the 10th player in the Open Era to defend the prestigious Wimbledon men’s singles championship successfully. Zverev, aged 29, aimed to add a Wimbledon title to his Roland Garros trophy obtained just last month.

The match kicked off with a tense tiebreak in the opening set, which Zverev narrowly secured with a score of 11-9. However, Sinner quickly regrouped, seizing the second-set tiebreak before elevating his game in the remaining two sets, breaking Zverev’s serve once in each to seal the match after a marathon battle lasting three hours and 46 minutes. Impressively, Sinner faced merely one break point throughout the contest and saved it successfully.

With a remarkable 80 percent success rate on his first serves and 65 percent on second serves, Sinner delivered a stellar performance, tallying 58 winners against 25 unforced errors. He dominated at the net as well, winning 78 percent of his net points and converting two out of five break points. Although Zverev struck 17 aces and 49 winners, he couldn’t capitalize on his single break-point opportunity and committed 45 unforced errors.

Sinner reflected on his victory, emphasizing the growth he experienced throughout the tournament.

I have improved throughout the whole tournament. If you see how I played in the early rounds compared to my final match, it shows continuous growth. That’s exactly what I aimed for. I sought improvement from myself, and we made it happen.”

Sinner also praised his return game, particularly during critical moments.

It’s easier to return when you know you can hold serve. This gives you the freedom to focus on your returns. However, against Sascha, breaking his serve is a tough task, especially on this surface.”

When asked about the significance of lifting the trophy again, Sinner remarked:

I wouldn’t describe it as relief. It’s more about enjoying the moment. Today presented its challenges, but even if I lost, playing in a Grand Slam final is incredibly rare and special.”

Zverev expressed satisfaction with his performance, despite the loss.

Overall, this championship was a remarkable change from my experience last year. I certainly wished to lift the trophy, but Jannik played better today and rightfully claimed the win.”

The German feels he is inching closer to being among the sport’s elite players.

I certainly hope so. My aim is to continue improving. This year has shown progress; I’ve been able to challenge the top competitors, even if I haven’t beaten them just yet.”

Looking forward, Zverev intends to maintain his current path.

I plan to stick to my routine. I’ll keep working on my skills and the improvements I’ve been striving for since January. Consistency is key.”
