Felix Auger-Aliassime had some pressing thoughts to share after his impressive victory in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon this past Sunday.

His main point of contention stemmed from a medical timeout taken by his opponent, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina from Spain, at a crucial juncture in the fourth set.

This dramatic moment unfolded as Auger-Aliassime was leading two sets to one and was serving for the match at 5-4. At 40-15 in his favor, Davidovich Fokina suddenly fell to the court in distress, prompting a medical timeout for a leg issue.

Unfortunately for Auger-Aliassime, he followed this with a double fault, which cost him the game, and he ended up losing the set in a tense tiebreak. However, he came back strong to clinch the fifth set 6-1, securing his advancement in the tournament.

As the players met at the net for the customary handshake, Auger-Aliassime expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the timing of the medical timeout. He elaborated on his feelings during the post-match press conference, advocating for a revision of the rules to disallow medical timeouts when an opponent is about to serve.

“I believe the rule needs reform. As it stands, players will exploit it for their gain,” Auger-Aliassime stated. “If you’re genuinely injured, then the right decision is to retire. But stopping during an opponent’s service game to call for a physio is simply unacceptable.”

Looking ahead, Auger-Aliassime is set to face the legendary Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Their last encounter was in 2022, where they have each claimed a victory in their head-to-head matchups, standing at 1-1.
