Only one Canadian remains in the singles competition at Wimbledon.
Gabriel Diallo’s journey came to an end on Thursday as he suffered a second-round defeat to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, leaving the third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime as the sole contender for Canada.
Despite trailing Sonego twice, Diallo fought valiantly, pushing the match to a fifth set before ultimately falling 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6, 6-7 (6), 6-2 at the prestigious All England Club.
In the deciding set, Diallo struggled after an early break, managing to break back but ultimately losing four consecutive games, leading to his defeat.
This second-round exit mirrors his performance from last year’s tournament debut.
Auger-Aliassime is set to take the court again on Friday for the third round, aiming to overcome American qualifier Michael Zheng, who caused an upset against Cam Norrie in Round 1.
In doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa and her Brazilian partner Luisa Stefani will kick off their tournament as the No. 2 seed on Friday.
Leyla Fernandez, however, faced disappointment in her opening doubles match alongside Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, losing 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 against Kazakh Anna Danilina and Serbian Aleksandra Krunic.
