LONDON — Serena Williams experienced a minor right knee injury during her first singles match in nearly four years at Wimbledon, yet she remains optimistic about teaming up with her sister Venus for doubles, as stated by her agent on Wednesday.
The 44-year-old tennis legend faced 20-year-old Maya Joint from Australia in the opening round, ultimately losing 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3. Notably, she did not seek medical attention during the match on Tuesday.
A 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, Williams clinched seven of her titles at Wimbledon but opted to skip media interactions following her match.
“Serena aggravated her right knee towards the end of the first set and was consequently excused from her media duties by Wimbledon and WTA medical staff,” remarked Jill Smoller, Williams’ agent. “She departed the venue that evening without assistance and is dedicated to preparing for her upcoming doubles match later this week.”
Wimbledon organizers have graciously extended wild card invitations for both singles and doubles, allowing Serena to compete alongside Venus.
