LONDON — The opening day of Wimbledon has certainly taken a turn for the worse for British tennis.

Just before the Grand Slam commenced, Emma Raducanu announced her withdrawal due to a stress fracture, and on Monday, Jack Draper joined her on the sidelines with an ongoing arm injury.

This unfortunate turn leaves the prestigious tournament without its top two British contenders.

As if that weren’t enough for local fans, the first six British players to grace the courts on Monday faced defeat in their opening matches.

While these players weren’t expected to advance far, the expectation was certainly higher for Raducanu and Draper.

Raducanu made headlines with her stunning triumph at the 2021 U.S. Open, while Draper, who was seeded No. 4 at last year’s Wimbledon, reached the semi-finals at the U.S. Open in 2024.

“The last 12 months have brought many painful moments, but this is by far the hardest,” said Draper, who was slated to compete against Taylor Fritz on Centre Court Tuesday.

Draper’s exit also means a missed opportunity for two-time champion Andy Murray, who was anticipated to support Draper during this tournament after stepping in as his coach for the grass-court season, reviving a long-awaited partnership.

However, Raducanu’s withdrawal struck the organizers the hardest, especially following her impressive showing at the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament earlier this month.

“It’s incredibly disheartening for a player to pull out the night before a Grand Slam, especially at their home event,” said Sally Bolton, CEO of the All England Club. “I’m genuinely saddened for Emma. … It’s a tough loss for us. On the brighter side, we still have many British players fighting for glory.”

These comments were made prior to the swift early exits of home talent, as Harriet Dart, Felix Gill, Mika Stojsavljevic, Max Basing, Alicia Dudeney, and 26th-seeded Cam Norrie were all knocked out in quick succession.
