LONDON — Novak Djokovic has hailed Serena Williams’ return to the tennis court as “truly inspirational” and “nothing short of epic.”

“That’s exactly what I conveyed to her,” Djokovic commented on Saturday at Wimbledon.

The 44-year-old Williams is generating excitement at SW19 — Wimbledon’s iconic postcode — as she gears up for her first singles match at the tournament in four years, taking on No. 53 Maya Joint in the opening round on Tuesday.

After stepping away from tennis following her farewell at the 2022 U.S. Open, Williams accepted a wild-card entry to compete in women’s doubles alongside her sister Venus, who is 46. She later secured another wild card to participate in singles.

“I’ve noticed her in the gym more frequently than I ever did during her peak,” said Djokovic, a 24-time major champion, reflecting on Williams, a 23-time major singles winner. “This shows she’s genuinely committed to making this comeback work.”

Djokovic continued, “I’ve always admired her incredible career, her journey, and her story. The same goes for Venus.”

Williams last graced Wimbledon in 2022, where she faced an early exit at the hands of Harmony Tan, then ranked 115th. Following a progression from tennis that she described as “evolving,” she stepped away after a third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic at the U.S. Open. In 2023, she welcomed her second daughter.

A seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, Williams could potentially meet defending champion Iga Swiatek in a highly anticipated third-round matchup.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is among the many players and fans eager for the upcoming action.

“I heard she’s doing this so her kids can see her play, and they’re thrilled about it,” Sabalenka remarked.

“What she’s accomplishing is remarkable. Plus, it’s Serena Williams—everyone is buzzing about it. Her presence is undoubtedly drawing more attention to tennis, which is fantastic. I can’t wait to watch her compete.”
