Canada’s very own Bianca Andreescu is set to grace the grass courts of Wimbledon next week as the highly anticipated women’s main draw kicks off.
In a thrilling third-round showdown, Andreescu secured her place at the prestigious tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Thursday, held at the Roehampton qualifying grounds, just a stone’s throw from the iconic All England Club.
The 26-year-old tennis star from Mississauga, Ontario, showcased her resilience by overcoming two breaks in the second set, earning her spot at Wimbledon after falling short last year against fellow Canadian Carson Branstine in the second round of qualifiers.
A former world No. 4 and the 2019 U.S. Open champion, Andreescu has graced the Wimbledon main draw five times previously, reaching the third round in both 2023 and 2024.
She’s the sole Canadian to advance through the qualifying rounds, following a hard-fought match where Toronto’s Katherine Sebov fell short, losing 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to Iryna Shymanovich from Russia.
Sebov’s emotional journey for a first Wimbledon appearance came to an end after she was a last-minute addition to the qualifying draw, which featured a remarkable comeback from a 5-3 deficit in the decisive set during her second-round match against Germany’s Noma Noha Akugue.
