Bianca Andreescu is inching closer to her long-awaited comeback in Grand Slam tennis.
The talented Canadian triumphed in her second-round Wimbledon qualifying match, defeating Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann with scores of 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday.
With her last Grand Slam appearance at the 2024 US Open, Andreescu is set to take on Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus on Thursday, with a coveted spot in the main draw at stake.
The Mississauga, Ont., native, who clinched the 2019 US Open title, delivered an impressive performance, serving 10 aces against Teichmann and converting 6 out of 17 break-point chances. She faced only seven breakpoints herself, with Teichmann successfully converting three.
In other news, fellow Canadian Katherine Sebov also advanced to the final qualifying round, emerging victorious with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 against Germany’s Noma Noha Akugue.
Her next challenge will be against Iryna Shymanovich from Belarus.
On the men’s side, Alexis Galarneau faced a setback, losing his second-round match to England’s Oliver Tarvet in straight sets (5-7, 2-6), thus concluding Canadian hopes in the men’s draw.
Main-draw action at the prestigious All-England Club kicks off on Monday.
