LONDON — Lorenzo Musetti, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, has officially withdrawn from the upcoming grass-court Grand Slam as he continues to recuperate from a left thigh injury.
This decision paves the way for fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, to enter the main draw, following a strong quarterfinal showing at the recent French Open.
The injury that hindered Musetti during the Italian Open last May also forced him to skip the French Open.
“Rehabilitation is progressing well, and the medical updates are promising. However, as I haven’t yet started a complete athletic training regime, we’ve reached the tough decision that I won’t be able to compete at Wimbledon this year,” stated the 15th-ranked Musetti on Instagram this Wednesday.
“It’s a challenging choice, but it’s the right one. My main focus is to return to the court at full strength.”
Musetti reached the semifinals at the All England Club in 2024, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic.
Currently ranked No. 49, Berrettini was outside the top 100 when the entry list for Wimbledon was finalized.
Wimbledon kicks off on June 29.
