LONDON — Legendary tennis champion Serena Williams has not dismissed the possibility of returning to singles play. However, she indicated during a press conference on Sunday that a comeback isn’t on the immediate horizon, as she prepares to re-enter the sport in doubles after an illustrious two-decade career.
Her first challenge will be at the doubles tournament at Queen’s Club, marking Williams’ competitive return since her last appearance at the 2022 US Open.
“I can’t give a definitive no right now. I probably need more training to get back to singles, but we’ll see how that unfolds. If it doesn’t happen, that’s just not part of my journey right now,” Williams explained, captivating her audience on Sunday.
Teaming up with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko, who is significantly younger, Williams is set to play against the third-seeded duo, Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe, in their opening match on Tuesday.
Since her emotional farewell at the 2022 U.S. Open, where she opted against labeling it a “retirement,” Williams has described her journey as one of “evolving” away from tennis.
Despite thinking last December that she was “definitely not” returning to tennis, conversations changed her perspective to, “why not? It’s a good time to explore,” she shared.
“It’s summer, the kids are out of school, making it the perfect opportunity to have some fun and see what unfolds,” Williams added.
With seven Wimbledon singles titles and six U.S. Open victories, Williams has left an indelible mark on the sport. She also secured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, primarily with her sister Venus Williams.
She has decided to free herself from the weight of expectations for her comeback.
“Winning isn’t a necessity for me. I’ve achieved more than most could dream of in a lifetime, so it’s not crucial to my happiness. It’s a reminder I need to keep close, as I truly have nothing to prove,” Williams expressed.
“I have nothing to lose, and it’s all about what I can gain … There’s absolutely no pressure on me during this journey.”
Seeing a reflection of herself in Mboko’s attitude and determination, Williams reached out to the young talent with an unexpected text about teaming up for Queen’s.
Mboko commented, “She’s playing phenomenally. Her ball striking is impeccable. I believe she could take time off and still find her rhythm effortlessly when she steps back on the court. It’s truly a remarkable gift she possesses.
“Personally, I think she’s ready. I’ve been practicing with her, and she’s hitting strong and is in great shape. It’ll be exciting to see how this unfolds.”
