PARIS — Coco Gauff encountered a minor vehicle mishap on her way to Roland Garros, where she was set to kick off her French Open title defense on Tuesday. Thankfully, she emerged unscathed.
“We had a little fender bender on the way to the venue today,” Gauff shared with a chuckle during her interview with TNT Sports. “We bumped into a pole and felt a small jolt. Unfortunately, my juice went everywhere in the car!”
“The vehicle was rendered unusable, so we ended up hailing a taxi,” Gauff recounted after her impressive 6-4, 6-0 victory against fellow American Taylor Townsend.
Gauff was able to take the court sooner than anticipated due to an earlier match ending prematurely on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
“Moments before I stepped onto the court, my dress got caught, so my physio had to rush to the restroom to assist me with it,” Gauff explained. “What a chaotic day it has been! But I believe that when such things occur, it helps me to focus less on the match. I’m just grateful to be here in one piece.”
Last year, Gauff triumphed over Aryna Sabalenka in the finals held in Paris.
