PARIS — On paper, it was a colossal disparity, and the match unfolded just the same.

Four-time champion Iga Świątek swiftly dispatched 136th-ranked French Open newcomer Emerson Jones with a dominant score of 6-1, 6-2 in just one hour during the opening round on Monday, amidst a largely empty Court Philippe-Chatrier on another sweltering day in Paris.

The only moment of concern for the third-ranked Świątek arose when she called for a trainer to re-tape her middle finger on her dominant hand due to a blister after the first set.

“I’m genuinely thrilled to play on this court,” she expressed. “First matches are always about adjusting to the conditions and the nature of the ball.”

This season, Świątek has yet to secure a title on clay and recently made a coaching switch, bringing on Francisco Roig, who previously aided the legendary 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal.

“Nothing comes without challenges,” Świątek remarked. “With added titles comes greater expectation to perform flawlessly. It’s crucial to remain humble, appreciate every moment, and work diligently from the tournament’s start.”

She has now improved her record to 28-1 in first-round encounters at Grand Slam events.

As the temperature was predicted to soar to 32 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit), Świątek efficiently took care of her 17-year-old Australian opponent, who had received a wild-card entry from the Roland Garros organizers.

Also progressing was Jasmine Paolini, who fell to Świątek in the 2024 final. The Italian triumphed over Dayana Yastremska with a score of 7-5, 6-3.

In men’s matches, eighth-seeded Alex De Minaur overcame Toby Samuel with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

Later, 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka and the beloved Gael Monfils will be in action, marking their final appearances at the French Open before both athletes retire at the end of the year.

The 41-year-old Wawrinka faces qualifier Jesper de Jong, who replaced Arthur Fils after the top French player withdrew due to a hip injury.

Monfils is set to battle fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston during the night session.
