ROME — In a commanding performance, three-time champion Iga Swiatek triumphed over America’s Jessica Pegula in straight sets on Wednesday, securing her place in the semifinals of the Italian Open.
Taking just 67 minutes on the court, the fourth-ranked Swiatek dispatched the fifth seed with a decisive score of 6-1, 6-2.
Swiatek’s stellar display is a promising sign as she gears up for the upcoming French Open, a tournament she has claimed four times.
“I’m thrilled to be spending time on court, playing solid matches against top competitors,” Swiatek expressed. “This definitely boosts my confidence. You can practice endlessly, but without the trials on the court and facing real pressure, there’s always that feeling of being a bit out of touch.”
“Now I’m pleased with having played several matches. I’m optimistic about my chances for two more here.”
Next up for Swiatek is either Elena Rybakina or Elina Svitolina, both of whom have also tasted victory in Rome.
In the men’s quarterfinals, Casper Ruud showcased his skill by defeating 13th-ranked Karen Khachanov with a scoreline of 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
The match faced a rain delay of over two hours at the start of the second set, and it appeared that Khachanov adapted better to the unexpected break.
Nonetheless, the 23rd-ranked Ruud made a strong comeback, breaking Khachanov’s serve twice at the beginning of the final set before closing out the match with his second match point.
Ruud’s next challenge will be against either 19-year-old Rafael Jodar from Spain or Italian competitor Luciano Darderi in the semifinals.
