In a challenging encounter, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu fell to Switzerland’s 12th seed Belinda Bencic, with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-1, during the women’s second round of the Italian Open on Thursday.
Bencic showcased her dominance by securing four out of six break points in an impressive second set, concluding the match in just 1 hour and 17 minutes.
Andreescu, hailing from Mississauga, Ontario, encountered difficulties with her serve, leading to a total of seven double faults throughout the match.
This victory marks Bencic’s first advancement to the third round of the Italian Open, where she will next take on 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya from Russia.
Previously, Andreescu made her way to the second round in Rome after achieving her first win at a WTA 1000 event this season, defeating Sofia Kenin from the United States 6-4, 7-5.
Later on Thursday, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, was set to compete against Argentina’s Mariano Navone in a men’s first-round matchup.
