Matteo Arnaldi’s remarkable win at the Sardegna Open has emerged as a highlight of the 2026 ATP Challenger season.
After publicly revealing that he had faced “the toughest six months” of his career due to a lingering right foot injury, the 25-year-old turned the tides in spectacular fashion, earning his most significant career title and his first victory at any level since June 2023.
The Italian defeated former World No. 6 Hubert Hurkacz with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the clay-court final, and now looks forward to competing in his home ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome.
“It feels surreal, especially considering how I started the season and the challenges I’ve faced this year. Holding the title is unbelievable,” Arnaldi told commentator Rob Werner with excitement. “Competing against such a quality player in the final and coming through triumphantly fills me with joy.”
Having reached a career-high ranking of No. 29 in 2024, Arnaldi arrived in Cagliari after a disappointing qualifying round at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he was attempting to defend quarter-final points. Entering the Challenger 175 event on a four-match losing streak with a 2-8 season record, he expressed pride in his performance this week.
“I don’t think I’ve fully grasped the significance of my achievement, especially since I’ve barely played lately. I just resumed full training two weeks ago,” Arnaldi reflected. “So, this victory feels exceptionally special. I’m immensely proud of it.”
“I was unsure whether to even participate after Madrid; my condition was a concern. We went back home, practiced a few days to assess how I was feeling, and, fortunately, things went well enough for us to chase some matches. To come away with the win is incredibly fulfilling—my first title in three years!”

The Sanremo native survived a match point in a thrilling quarter-final against Nuno Borges, narrowly winning 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(3) after a grueling three-hour encounter. Even after contesting three nail-biting matches this week, Arnaldi’s right foot held up impressively under the pressure.
“It started out feeling worse, but then it improved. I’m honestly surprised,” Arnaldi noted. “Typically, over the past month, it’s been the opposite. So, this is a very encouraging sign. I have no expectations for Rome; I just want to recover and see how everything feels in the coming days. If I can continue to practice as I’ve done this week, I’m optimistic about getting back to my desired level.”
Tabilo triumphs at Aix-en-Provence for the second time
Chilean Alejandro Tabilo has emerged victorious at the Open Aix Provence Crédit Agricole, capturing his second title in three years. The 28-year-old previously clinched the event in 2024, defeating Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a tense final.
After overcoming four Top 100 players on his path to the title, Tabilo becomes one of only four players to secure multiple trophies at the Challenger 175 level, joining the ranks of Ugo Humbert, Nuno Borges, and Mariano Navone.

Wong makes history; Safiullin captures consecutive Challenger titles
Coleman Wong made history by claiming the Jiangxi Open title, becoming the first champion from Hong Kong in ATP Challenger history. The 21-year-old defeated Adam Walton 7-5, 7-6(4) in the final, propelling him to a career-high No. 110 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
Roman Safiullin celebrated his second straight Challenger title after an intense week at the Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE. Just two weeks post his win at the Oeiras Challenger, the 28-year-old emerged victorious in a final that required him to go the distance in four out of five matches, defeating Jaime Faria 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).
Spanish player Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo secured his first Challenger title at the Ostra Group Open By Porsche Servisni Centrum Ostrava, beating local favorite Zdenek Kolar 6-4, 7-6(4) in the final.
Gauthier Onclin bagged back-to-back titles in Côte d’Ivoire, overpowering American Michael Mmoh 6-3, 6-4 in the championship match. The Belgian now sits at a career-high ranking of World No. 183, leaving Abidjan after an impressive 10-match winning streak.
Fellow Belgian Buvaysar Gadamauri celebrated his first Challenger victory at the Shymkent Challenger 2, defeating India’s 18-year-old sensation Manas Dhamne 7-6(6), 6-4 in the final.
