MADRID — In a thrilling encounter, Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk triumphed over Russia’s Mirra Andreeva with a score of 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the prestigious Madrid Open title on Saturday.

The match bore significant emotional weight, as neither player extended a handshake at the net, a poignant reminder of the ongoing conflict between their nations since Russia’s invasion in 2022.

In her victory speech, Kostyuk fervently declared, “Glory to God and glory to Ukraine,” encapsulating the pride and resilience of her homeland.

Ranked 23rd in the world, Kostyuk collapsed onto the clay after sealing her victory, her hands covering her face as Andreeva’s final shot sailed out. Moments later, Andreeva, visibly emotional, sank into her seat and wept into a towel.

This victory marks Kostyuk’s third title on the WTA tour, capturing back-to-back championships following her win in Rouen just a week prior.

The eighth-ranked Andreeva, celebrating her 19th birthday just days earlier, graciously acknowledged Kostyuk in her runner-up speech. “I want to extend my congratulations to Marta and her team for today’s win and for an incredible season,” she said while Kostyuk applauded. “Winning two tournaments in a row is truly impressive—congrats!”
