A historic first-time matchup: Alexander Zverev vs. Alexander Blockx in Madrid.
By ATP Staff
As Alexander Blockx rose on the Friday before the Mutua Madrid Open, uncertainty loomed—would he face the rigors of qualifying at this prestigious ATP Masters 1000 event? However, a wave of late withdrawals cleared his path, allowing the Belgian star to claim his spot in the main draw. Since then, he has soared to reach his inaugural ATP Masters 1000 semi-final at the iconic Caja Magica.
This Friday, the 21-year-old from Antwerp faces an uphill battle against the seasoned two-time Madrid champion and current second seed, Alexander Zverev. Will the breakout sensation continue his extraordinary journey, or will Zverev assert his dominance and secure a place in his first final of the season?
Blockx is tasked with overcoming a significant experience gap when facing one of the most reliable figures on the ATP Tour. After starting April without a main-draw appearance at any clay-court ATP event, he now finds himself facing Zverev in what marks the German’s 11th Masters 1000 semi-final on clay.
“In the past couple of years, I haven’t felt much confidence on clay. But after my recent performances, I think I can’t say that anymore,” Blockx reflected after an impressive upset against defending champion Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals. “I’ve worked on all aspects of my game, and these conditions are slightly quicker than usual, which works to my advantage. I’m starting to really enjoy clay now.”
This encounter will be their first-ever matchup, a prospect Zverev approaches with respect. He has reached the semi-finals of all four Masters 1000 events this season—joining tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Jannik Sinner in achieving this feat since 1990. Yet, Zverev acknowledges Blockx’s impressive rise, moving 34 spots to No. 35 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
“He’s a young, spirited player. I genuinely enjoy watching him play—he’s a respectful guy on and off the court,” Zverev said, expressing enthusiasm for their inaugural meeting.
[ALSO LIKE]History favors Zverev, as he boasts a 13-0 record against players ranked outside the Top 30 in Madrid according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. With three previous final appearances in this tournament, he is looking to break his streak of five losses in semi-finals this season. Notably, he has accumulated more career wins in Madrid (29) than Blockx’s total tour-level matches (28).
Both Blockx and Zverev possess powerful serves and can assert control during rallies, but the critical challenge for Blockx will be to apply pressure on his vastly experienced opponent.
“I never envisioned reaching this stage,” Blockx admitted. At just 21 years and 25 days, he could become the sixth-youngest finalist in the tournament’s history, following in the footsteps of Carlos Alcaraz, Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Zverev, and Andy Murray. “But once you find your confidence and hit your stride, so much is possible.”
Blockx will be counting on that newfound confidence to secure what could be another monumental victory at a tournament where he has already triumphed over third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Expect their match to commence no earlier than 8 p.m. local time.
