Rafael Jodar is set for a dream encounter as he steps onto the court Wednesday at the Mutua Madrid Open. The rising Spanish star will face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner for the very first time. With a supportive home crowd cheering him on, Jodar, one of the ATP Tour’s most promising talents, is prepared to tackle his greatest challenge yet.
“It’s incredibly thrilling to face Jannik for the first time, especially in my hometown,” Jodar expressed, exhilarated by this remarkable opportunity at the Manolo Santana Stadium. “I need to approach it point by point.”
Consistency has been pivotal for Jodar this week at the Caja Magica, where he has successfully navigated past some formidable opponents. The Madrid native celebrated his first Top 10 victory against Alex de Minaur, triumphed over Brazilian prodigy Joao Fonseca, and advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final by defeating Vit Kopriva.
“There’s still a long road ahead before I contemplate beating a World No. 1. But if I maintain the right mindset and execute my game plan, those opportunities may arise,” Jodar reflected. “I believe I have a chance to win, but I must focus on what has worked for me so far. Every opponent brings their best level, so I need to concentrate on my strengths.”
Wednesday’s match will be a unique experience for Jodar, as he faces a four-time major champion. For the Madrid player, the clash is not only a battle; it’s also an opportunity to gauge the distance he needs to bridge to reach the elite level of the Tour.
“Jannik is an exceptional player, as evident in every match he plays,” Jodar noted. “His focus and mentality are remarkable, greatly benefiting his game. If I want to succeed tomorrow, I need to elevate my performance to the highest level.”
Jodar has made an impressive beginning to the 2026 season, climbing to No. 34 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings thanks to his outstanding performances. Earlier this year, he achieved significant milestones, including his initial match win at a major tournament and securing his first ATP Tour title. Now, he faces the challenge of making things difficult for the world’s top player in Madrid.
“I’m anticipating nothing less than a challenging match. I’ll strive to perform my best and absorb as much as I can from this experience,” Jodar said. “I’ll approach it with the same determination as in all my previous matches, confident that if I execute my game plan correctly, I’ll have my chances.”
