Prepare for a spectacle of talent as #NextGenATP stars Joao Fonseca and Rafael Jodar clash in a thrilling third-round match at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Hailing from Madrid, Jodar faces Fonseca in what could be the kickstart of an intense rivalry. This will be their first official Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting, a precursor to many electrifying battles ahead.

At just 19 years old, both players have swiftly ascended the PIF ATP Rankings and enchanted audiences worldwide with their dynamic playing styles. Fonseca, reigning champion of the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, clinched two ATP Tour titles last season in Buenos Aires and Basel, peaking at an impressive No. 24 in November.

Known for drawing large crowds, Fonseca’s Brazilian football jerseys are a common sight among his fans. Meanwhile, Jodar will enjoy the advantage of local support as he competes in an ATP Masters 1000 event for only the second time in his burgeoning career.

“Joao is a formidable adversary, and I need to prep meticulously for this match,” Jodar remarked. “I have to focus on my game and stay resilient if things become challenging, unlike in my previous round.”

Jodar has kicked off his clay-court season impressively, winning 10 of his first 11 matches on this surface. He secured his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech and made it to the semi-finals in Barcelona, bowing out to eventual champion Arthur Fils in a fierce three-set battle. Having turned pro at the beginning of the season, Jodar now stands tall at a career-high World No. 42. Fonseca, on the other hand, reached the quarter-finals in both Monte-Carlo and Munich before making his way to Madrid.

Just a year ago, Jodar sat at No. 687 in the PIF ATP Rankings, recently transitioning from a stint at the University of Virginia—an interesting parallel to Fonseca, who also once considered a college path but ultimately chose to turn pro in February 2024.

Similarly, Fonseca was at No. 655 in the PIF ATP Rankings in February 2023. Fast forward a year, and he celebrated his first tour-level title in Buenos Aires, skyrocketing to World No. 68, becoming a prominent name on the ATP Tour.

Both Fonseca and Jodar, the only teenagers in the Top 100, have also qualified for the PIF ATP Next Gen Accelerator programme, which aims to nurture the best up-and-coming talents in tennis.

Riding high on confidence, Jodar recently achieved his first Top 10 victory over World No. 8 Alex de Minaur with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 performance. Fonseca enters this match fresh, having earned a first-round bye followed by a walkover in the second round when Marin Cilic withdrew due to food poisoning.

The match on Sunday will be enhanced by Madrid’s altitude, which often favors explosive and aggressive ball striking—perfect for the thrilling brand of tennis that this encounter promises to deliver.
