Canada’s Auger-Aliassime, Fernandez Secure Opening Wins in Madrid

Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada kicked off his Madrid Open campaign with a victory on Saturday.

The third seed, Auger-Aliassime, secured a 6-3, 6-4 win against Lithuania’s Vilius Gaubas. He is set to compete against Belgium’s Alexander Blockx on Monday.

In an impressive performance, Auger-Aliassime unleashed seven aces without committing a single double-fault, successfully capitalizing on two of his five break points.

Gaubas managed three aces and recorded one double-fault during the match.

On the other hand, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ont., faced a tough loss, going down 6-2, 6-1 against Norway’s Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, who converted four out of six break points.

Turning to the women’s bracket, Canadian Leylah Fernandez staged a comeback to defeat American Iva Jovic 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 24th-seed Fernandez was flawless in converting all five of her service breaks, while Jovic, the 15th seed, converted three out of eight attempts.

Fernandez recorded three aces but also had five double-faults, while Jovic matched her with three aces and two double-faults.
