Rafael Jodar is on fire!
The 19-year-old sensation from Spain delivered yet another spectacular performance on Friday at the prestigious Mutua Madrid Open. He overcame World No. 8, Alex de Minaur, with a commanding score of 6-3, 6-1, marking his first victory over a Top 10 player.
The #NextGenATP star thrilled the local fans, showcasing a powerful and precise game as he expertly struck the ball from both sides, leaving De Minaur with few answers. Even World No. 1 Jannik Sinner watched from the sidelines, visibly impressed by Jodar’s prowess.
Following his impressive 75-minute triumph, Jodar lifted his arms in celebration and is now set to face fellow 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca in a captivating matchup between two of the youngest talents on the ATP circuit. With this victory, Jodar joins Fonseca as just the second player born in 2006 or later to secure a Top 10 win.
Just a year ago, Jodar was ranked outside the Top 600, but his ascent has been nothing short of remarkable. Earlier this month, he clinched his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech and reached the semi-finals at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona. Additionally, he matched his third-round achievement from Miami here in Madrid.
Fonseca advanced to the third round after Marin Cilic withdrew from their scheduled match due to food poisoning. He has also enjoyed a fantastic run, reaching the quarter-finals at an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time in Monte-Carlo.
