Gael Monfils’ last appearance at the Mutua Madrid Open concluded in a straight-sets loss on Thursday as he suffered a 3-6, 4-6 defeat to Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the first round.

Earlier that day, his wife, WTA star Elina Svitolina, also faced an early exit in Madrid. Although it wasn’t the farewell Monfils envisioned, the 39-year-old maintained a positive outlook, leaving the Spanish capital with tremendous gratitude.

“It wasn’t the best day for the Monfils family,” the Frenchman shared on X. “It was a tough match, and I wish I could have performed better in my final Madrid appearance.”

“Having competed here for the 15th time, I want to express my sincere thanks to @MutuaMadridOpen for all the years and for the chance to return.”

Monfils’ most memorable moments at the Caja Magica came in 2008 and 2010, where he reached the quarter-finals before falling to the eventual champions, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal. Wrapping up his Madrid career, the former World No. 6 holds a 16-14 tournament record, as per the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, having competed against all members of the ‘Big Four’.

Even in defeat, Monfils is shifting gears. The 13-time tour-level champion expressed his eagerness to prepare for Roland Garros, which kicks off next month.

“Now, I’m focused on getting in the best possible shape for Roland Garros,” he shared. “J-31, I’m excited to share this incredible moment with all of you.”

“I’ve received a few messages, and I truly appreciate your support, even on tougher days like today—it means a lot to me. We will not give up.”
