On the inaugural day of the Mutua Madrid Open, a Spanish legend took his final bow.

Roberto Bautista Agut received a heartfelt sendoff on Wednesday at the Manolo Santana Stadium, where an emotional crowd rallied behind him. Competing on Madrid’s clay for the last time, his journey symbolized unwavering passion, dedication, and profound respect for tennis. A standing ovation echoed through the Caja Mágica for one of its most cherished figures throughout the tournament’s storied history.

At 38, Bautista Agut poured his heart into this emotional farewell, surrounded by family, friends, and a crowd that had cheered for him season after season. The match result, where Argentina’s Thiago Agustín Tirante triumphed with a score of 6-2, 6-4, paled in comparison to this monumental goodbye.

“As kids, we dream of a tennis career and playing in these esteemed tournaments,” Bautista Agut shared, as he received a commemorative plaque from directors Feliciano Lopez and Garbine Muguruza. “I’ve realized that dream, competing in the finest tournaments globally. Winning the Davis Cup with Feli and my teammates has been a proud achievement, but the lessons tennis has imparted on me are what I cherish most.”

“These are moments you don’t fully grasp while you’re still active. As the decision approaches, it sinks in. Today was filled with emotions; it wasn’t an easy match to play. I wanted to shine as a local competitor this year. It’s hard to believe that even at 38, the nerves persist. It was a beautiful farewell, shared with my family and team on the court.”

Bautista Agut has earned a special place in the hearts of Madrid fans, who relished witnessing his dynamic performances. With countless memories etched in the minds of spectators and 26 appearances at the Caja Mágica, the former No. 9 in the PIF ATP Rankings emerged as a pivotal figure in Spanish tennis over the last two decades. From his impressive semi-final debut to becoming a mainstay on the tournament schedule, Bautista Agut made Madrid an annual highlight of his career.

“Madrid has been home to some of my most cherished athletic moments, and I’m incredibly grateful to the tournament,” Bautista Agut remarked. “My semi-final run in 2014 was a pivotal moment in my career, launching me into the Top 15. The most emotional day was undoubtedly the Davis Cup final here. I hold those memories dearly. This court will always have a unique place in my heart.”

Having recently announced that he will conclude his career at the end of the 2026 season, Bautista Agut has yet to finalize his tournament schedule. His emotions will shape his final steps on the ATP Tour.

“I’ll continue to play and take it one match at a time,” Bautista expressed, with upcoming plans to participate in the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome and Roland Garros in the coming weeks. “Last year’s injury at the US Open kept me out for six months, preventing me from earning points. My ranking remains solid, but I need to compete if I want to extend my season.”

The decision to retire came as physical challenges took their toll on the resilient athlete. Now, Bautista Agut’s focus is simple—to treasure his final tournaments, treating each like a first, as a way to give back to the sport that has meant everything to him.

“It’s a difficult choice,” he confessed. “I first discussed it with my wife, my steadfast supporter. After my career’s most serious injury and six months of recovery, I felt lost. My performance was lacking. After Indian Wells, I finally felt better, competing without pain. This journey has taken its toll, but I’m at a level now where I can manage a full year of engaging matches.”
