As the Mutua Madrid Open approaches, Jannik Sinner has a golden opportunity to solidify his position as World No. 1 and gain crucial momentum in what promises to be a pivotal part of the season.

The Italian athlete returned to the pinnacle of the PIF ATP Rankings following a stunning victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the finals of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month. This win not only reaffirmed his dominance but also set the stage for a crucial consolidating phase.

Sinner enters the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid as the top seed, aiming for an incredible fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title. His past triumphs include victories in Paris last season, as well as Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo in 2026. This impressive run has granted him a 350-point lead over Alcaraz — who is out of the Madrid tournament due to injury — at the top of the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

As he begins his 68th week at No. 1, Sinner holds a two-week advantage over Alcaraz’s 66 weeks. With his recent string of successes, the Italian is well-positioned to extend his reign, starting in Madrid.

His best outcome in the Spanish capital came during his last visit in 2024, where he reached the quarter-finals before withdrawing before facing Felix Auger-Aliassime. With no points to defend from last year, Sinner is riding a wave of confidence, boosted by an impressive 17-match winning streak and the opportunity to expand his lead following Alcaraz’s withdrawal.

Looking ahead beyond Madrid, Sinner has 650 points to defend in Rome and a substantial 1,300 points from his runner-up finish at Roland Garros last year, where he narrowly lost to Alcaraz after having three championship points. Alcaraz, conversely, has 3,000 points to defend: 1,000 in Rome and 2,000 at Roland Garros.

Additionally, Sinner has positioned himself strongly for the ATP Year-End No. 1 honors presented by PIF for the first time since 2024. The 24-year-old currently leads Alcaraz by 260 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. While the season is still long, this cushion offers a solid foundation for Sinner as he navigates the remaining clay swing in Europe.

Jannik Sinner will kick off his Mutua Madrid Open campaign against a qualifier: either Benjamin Bonzi or Titouan Droguet. Notably, Sinner boasts a 3-0 record against Bonzi in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, although he has faced a deciding set against the Frenchman twice. On the other hand, he has yet to compete against Droguet.
