In a thrilling finale at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Sunday, Arthur Fils demonstrated remarkable tenacity, overcoming a late charge from Andrey Rublev to win the championship with a score of 6-2, 7-6(2).

Fils appeared to be cruising to victory, holding a 5-2 lead in the second set and serving for the match at 5-3. However, Rublev wasn’t ready to concede defeat; capitalizing on a double fault from Fils, he broke back to narrow the gap to 5-4. Despite Fils earning three championship points on Rublev’s serve, the Russian rattled off five straight points to draw the set level at 5-5.

The momentum shifted as Rublev secured a break to surge ahead 6-5. Yet, Fils remained unshaken, breaking back immediately to force a tie-break where he regained command, clinching the match with a remarkable seven consecutive points and claiming his first title since his return from injury.

“It was a tough finish,” Fils reflected. “The pressure was intense. For a set and a half, I felt in control, but as I approached the finish line, doubts crept in. Nevertheless, I’m thrilled with how I handled the tie-break.”

Early nerves were evident in the match, with Fils dropping his serve in the first game. However, the 21-year-old exhibited his resilience, leveraging his powerful groundstrokes to dominate rallies and secure six consecutive games, ultimately taking the opening set.

Fils delivered an impressive performance, hitting 31 winners compared to Rublev’s 10, and won 68% of his first-serve points (26/38), as tracked by Infosys ATP Stats. The Frenchman’s victory, lasting one hour and 40 minutes, strengthens his record to 2-1 against Rublev in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

This victory signifies a significant milestone in Fils’ inspiring comeback following an eight-month hiatus in 2025 due to a back injury. Since his return in February, the former World No. 14 has surged through the tour, reaching the final in Doha, and advancing to the quarter-finals in Indian Wells and the semi-finals in Miami.

“A huge thank you to my team,” Fils expressed. “We’ve put in tremendous work during my eight-month struggle with injury, and now we’re back on the court with a trophy. I’m genuinely grateful.”

Fils’ title run was nothing short of remarkable. As the ninth seed, the young talent faced early elimination but saved two match points against Terence Atmane in the first round. He proceeded to defeat Brandon Nakashima, cause an upset against second seed Lorenzo Musetti, and outlast Rafael Jodar to reach his inaugural championship match in Barcelona.

With this win, Fils has ascended four ranks to No. 25 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, becoming the French No. 1 for the first time since September 2025, overtaking Arthur Rinderknech. He is now positioned sixth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin as he aims for his first Nitto ATP Finals qualification.

Rublev, making his debut in the Barcelona final, sought to secure his first title since Doha 2025. The 28-year-old is set to compete next at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he previously emerged victorious in 2024.
