Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell due to an injury.

This time, his usual smile was overshadowed by a cap shielding most of his face. Alcaraz entered the press conference room at the Barcelona Open with a decidedly different demeanor, first requesting a glass of water before sharing the disappointing news that the discomfort he experienced in his wrist during his opening match had escalated into a full-blown injury, necessitating his withdrawal from the ATP 500 tournament.

“It’s a strange and tough position to be in again,” Alcaraz expressed Wednesday, on what was meant to be his day off in Barcelona. “Two years ago, I was stuck in a similar situation without having taken the court at all.”

Alcaraz had set aside three hours on Court 18 at the prestigious Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 to undergo tests on his wrist. Unfortunately, the results indicated a more serious injury than initially anticipated. “After today’s tests, it’s evident that it’s a bit more severe than expected. I really need to listen to my body and prioritize my long-term health,” he said.

The trouble began during the first set against Otto Virtanen, prompting him to call for a physio at 5-4. “As you all saw yesterday, after a return, my wrist gave way. I started feeling discomfort, which progressively worsened during the match,” Alcaraz reflected. “Initially, I thought it was just a minor issue, a little niggle from the week’s exertions.”

Before exiting the room, Alcaraz shared heartfelt words for the fans and the tournament: “I truly dislike withdrawing from competitions, especially this one. It brings me great sadness to leave early, but I must focus on my recovery with my team, the doctors, and the physio to ensure I come back stronger. I hope to see you all on the tennis court very soon!”
