In light of Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell this Wednesday, Jannik Sinner is assured of maintaining his No. 1 ranking in the PIF ATP standings for the upcoming week.
Alcaraz, who formerly held the top ranking until surrendering it to Sinner after a loss in the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters final, had a chance to re-establish his position in Barcelona. A title win at this ATP 500 clay-court event would have seen Alcaraz reclaim the No. 1 spot.
However, due to injury, the Spaniard announced his withdrawal after securing a first-round victory on Tuesday. With 330 PIF ATP Ranking points to defend from last year’s final, where he lost to Holger Rune, Alcaraz faces a major setback this week.
Currently, Sinner, who is not in action this week, boasts a 390-point lead over Alcaraz in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. The Italian will be embarking on his 68th week at No. 1 when the new rankings are released on Monday.
The next highlight on the tour is the much-anticipated Mutua Madrid Open, marking the second clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the year. Both Sinner and Alcaraz enter the Caja Magica without any points to defend, with main draw matches starting next Wednesday.
