Joao Fonseca continued his stellar journey at the BMW Open by Bitpanda on Wednesday, effortlessly defeating Arthur Rinderknech to advance to the quarter-finals.

With a convincing score of 6-3, 6-2, Fonseca’s high-caliber performance in Munich saw him take charge of the match early on, marking his second victory over Rinderknech in just eight days. The 19-year-old has now made it to the last eight at ATP Tour events consecutively for the first time, having previously triumphed over the Frenchman at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.

As Fonseca gears up to face either second seed Ben Shelton or Alexander Blockx for a spot in the semifinals, he aims to maintain his calm demeanor, especially during pivotal moments like those against Rinderknech. The two-time ATP Tour champion notably saved all nine break points he faced during the match, as highlighted by Infosys ATP Stats.

“That was a critical aspect of today’s match,” Fonseca remarked. “I remained highly focused because I anticipated a challenging match. Rinderknech is already an accomplished player, especially at altitude where he can unleash his full arsenal—serving, volleying, and clever drop shots.”

“His returns were exceptional today. At 3-2 in the set while I was serving, that game was crucial. I found myself at 0/40 but managed to serve well under pressure. Those points made a significant impact on the outcome.”

Having reached his sixth ATP Tour quarter-final, and the third at the ATP 500 level, Fonseca has climbed five positions to No. 30 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings this week.

Following Fonseca and Rinderknech’s showdown, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Fabian Marozsan took to Munich’s center court to complete their first-round match, which had been paused at 2-2 in the final set due to darkness. Ultimately, it was Marozsan, who saved a match point at 5-6, 30/40 in the second set, prevailing with scores of 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. The 2025 semi-finalist will be facing Denis Shapovalov in the second round.
