The rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz has become one of the most captivating stories in tennis, as both players battle for supremacy in the PIF ATP Rankings, now separated by a mere week of dominance.
As they approached Sunday’s Monte-Carlo final, both athletes were tied with 66 weeks at No. 1. However, Sinner’s victory unveiled the next chapter in their gripping competition — marking the beginning of his 67th week at the top. This was his third consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, underscoring his relentless pursuit of the No. 1 spot, a journey that dates back to the thrilling 2022 US Open.
It was there that Alcaraz, saved a match point to triumph over Sinner in a gripping five-set quarter-final, leading him to his first Grand Slam title against Casper Ruud, and establishing himself as the youngest World No. 1 at just 19 years and four months old.
Alcaraz’s triumph in New York not only marked the start of his remarkable ascent but also set the stage for a fierce rivalry. In 2023, he and Novak Djokovic exchanged the No. 1 ranking as they vied for the title, while Sinner steadily climbed, showcasing his skills with impressive performances in elite tournaments.
In June 2024, Sinner seized the top spot for the first time, holding it for an astonishing 65 weeks, joining legends like Federer, Connors, Hewitt, and Djokovic — all of whom spent over a year as No. 1 in their debut spells.
Even as Sinner and Alcaraz traded the four major titles in 2025, Alcaraz regained his spot as World No. 1 with a key victory at the US Open, earning his second ATP Year-End No. 1 honors.
Entering the current season, Alcaraz has been unstoppable, achieving the remarkable feat of a Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January, followed by another title in Doha. Yet Sinner has made a powerful resurgence.
With his historic ‘Sunshine Double’ wins in Indian Wells and Miami last month, the 24-year-old continued his momentum by clinching his first clay-court ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte-Carlo, extending his winning streak to 17 matches. His victory over Alcaraz in the Principality propelled him ahead, now securing 67 weeks at No. 1, surpassing Alcaraz’s tally of 66.
Since June 10, 2024, these two prodigies have exclusively held the No. 1 position, showcasing their remarkable hold on the PIF ATP Rankings. The gap between them and the rest of the contenders is stark: Alexander Zverev, the nearest rival, trails a staggering 7,685 points behind Alcaraz, a deficit that exceeds Zverev’s own total of 5,555 points.
