A New Chapter: Robert Cash’s Proposal to Emerson in Monte-Carlo.
By Sam Jacot
Just two days after claiming his first trophy of the season in Marrakech, Robert Cash experienced an even more meaningful moment in his life.
The American doubles tennis star enjoyed a victorious week in Morocco, partnering with JJ Tracy at the ATP 250 clay-court event. However, the celebrations were far from over. From Marrakech, Cash jetted off to Monte-Carlo, not only for an ATP Masters 1000 tournament but also for a moment that would change his life forever.
By Monday evening, against the breathtaking backdrop of the Côte d’Azur, Cash knelt down and asked Emerson to be his wife.
“This is a moment I’ll cherish forever,” Cash shared with ATPTour.com.
Their love story began long before either stepped onto the ATP Tour. Growing up in the same city and attending the same schools, Cash and Emerson forged a friendship that blossomed into romance during their high school years. Their journey intertwined further as they attended Ohio State University and later shared a home while Cash pursued his tennis aspirations. And now, they are engaged.
The path to the proposal was a whirlwind. Cash began his quest for the perfect ring last year but quickly faced challenges due to his demanding travel schedule. Finding time to explore options in person proved to be quite the task.
“It was a bit of a scramble,” Cash recalled. “I didn’t realize how lengthy the process would be. I aimed to secure a ring before my trip to Australia, but it took way more time than I expected, especially with my tournament commitments.”
After a few months filled with hurdles, Cash finally found the right diamond just in time for the Miami tournament. Yet, he faced another timing obstacle; the ring wasn’t ready before he left for Morocco at the end of March. How was he going to get it overseas?
In a clever ruse, Cash’s mother wrapped the ring as a belated birthday present, allowing Emerson to unknowingly carry her own engagement ring across the Atlantic.
“Emerson had no idea she was holding the ring all along,” Cash said. “I was anxious the entire time, but I made sure it was in her carry-on. You can never be too careful!”
Along with the logistical challenges of transporting the ring, Cash faced another dilemma: timing. Initially, he hoped to pop the question earlier in the week, but his unexpected triumph in Marrakech pushed his plans back.
“I had some ideas for a Saturday or Sunday proposal,” Cash explained. “Winning Marrakech altered my timeline, but I was more than thrilled.”
Monte-Carlo felt like the perfect stage for this pivotal moment—a picturesque location known for romance, and Cash knew Emerson would take time off her work as an interior designer to join him. Once the ring was ready, he quickly kicked his plans into high gear.
Cash scouted for a local photographer and researched stunning locations, relying on everything from online resources to advice from Emerson’s brother-in-law. He ultimately selected a hidden gem he had only seen in pictures, though finding it proved to be an adventure of its own.
“I chose a place I had never visited, relying solely on photos. I coordinated with the photographer for a video guide to make sure I found it,” Cash noted. “It was nerve-wracking to ensure everything went smoothly.”

On the big day, Cash told Emerson they had a dinner reservation. Arriving early, he cleverly suggested a romantic stroll to soak in the beauty of their surroundings. At just the right moment, he asked what seemed like a passerby to take a photo, who was, in fact, the awaiting photographer. Without skipping a beat, Cash lowered himself to one knee.
Post-proposal, the couple enjoyed an impromptu photo tour around Monte-Carlo, capturing their special moments against some of the globe’s most picturesque backdrops. They ended their night with a romantic dinner overlooking the city, taking in views of the Monte-Carlo Country Club courts, the harbor, and even the far-off Italian coastline. For Cash, it was the cherry on top of a remarkable series of events.
“I wanted to do it sooner rather than later,” Cash confessed. “Timing felt crucial, and it couldn’t have been more perfect in the end.”
Next up, Cash will aim to carry this newfound joy onto the court at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona, teaming up once again with his fellow countryman Tracy.
