In a remarkable display of skill, Matteo Berrettini sent shockwaves through the tennis world on Wednesday during the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, dismantling World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev with an astonishing 6-0, 6-0 victory in just 49 minutes to progress to the third round.

Playing as a wild card, Berrettini showcased ruthless efficiency against a struggling Medvedev, who failed to earn a single game point throughout the match. This defeat marks a historic moment for Medvedev, as it is his first-ever tour-level loss without winning a game.

“This has to be one of the best performances of my career,” Berrettini reflected. “I believe I only missed three shots in the entire match, which is quite a feat against a challenging opponent like Daniil. My game plan was spot on, and my skills were on full display.

“I faced two break points at the start, but after that, it felt like I was outplaying him. I didn’t expect to win without conceding a game, but I maintained my focus – knowing that just one or two breaks isn’t always enough, I kept the pressure on.”

The Italian powerhouse has impressively not lost a single game across his first two matches in the Principality this week. He advanced in the opening round when Roberto Bautista Agut retired while trailing 4-0. Now, the former No. 6 ranked player on the PIF ATP Rankings looks to keep his perfect streak alive against either Joao Fonseca or Arthur Rinderknech in the third round.

“Having played for many years, I knew it was crucial to hold my serve at the start of the second set,” Berrettini added. “It can pivot on just a few points, and once you achieve a couple of breaks, you feel more relaxed and the ball just seems to fly off your racket.”

This match also marks Berrettini’s first tour-level victory with a 6-0, 6-0 score, and it stands as his first win against a Top 10 player since he defeated Alexander Zverev in Monte-Carlo last season. Notably, in 2025, Alex de Minaur delivered a similar blow to Grigor Dimitrov, winning their quarter-final match 6-0, 6-0 in the same venue.

On the other hand, Medvedev faced his first clay challenge of the season. The 30-year-old, who previously claimed hard-court titles in Dubai and Brisbane earlier this year, struggled significantly on Court Rainier III, committing 27 unforced errors while succumbing to Berrettini for the first time in their Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings (3-1).
