In a remarkable achievement, Marco Trungelliti became the oldest player to reach his first ATP Tour final in the Open Era, stunning fans at the Grand Prix Hassan II.

At 36, Trungelliti defeated top seed Luciano Darderi with a score of 6-4, 7-6(2), sealing his place in the Marrakech final after two hours and 10 minutes of exhilarating tennis. This marks the Argentine’s first ATP Tour semi-final appearance since 402 weeks ago in Umag (2018), culminating in a quest for championship glory.

“I believed in this moment; that’s why I’m here today. It wouldn’t have been possible otherwise,” Trungelliti shared during his on-court interview. “My team, my wife, my kids—all of us have worked hard to achieve something special, and today we broke that record.”

Previously, the record for the oldest first-time finalist belonged to Victor Estrella Burgos, who reached the Quito final in 2015 at 34 years and 190 days, ultimately winning the title.

Thanks to a dazzling array of drop shots that perplexed Darderi, Trungelliti now stands on the brink of lifting the trophy on Sunday. Set to make his debut in the Top 100 when the rankings are updated on Monday, Trungelliti has climbed to No. 75 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
