In an exhilarating match at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, Learner Tien secured his spot in his first-ever ATP Tour clay-court quarter-final by defeating Nishesh Basavareddy 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
After his victory, the 20-year-old humorously signed the camera lens with, “Doubled my clay Ws today,” a nod to his previous 1-6 record on clay heading into the ATP 250 event.
Tien crafted 15 break opportunities, successfully converting three of them, as per Infosys ATP Stats, enhancing his record to 3-0 in his Head2Head matchups against Basavareddy.
“I felt my energy dipped a bit in the second set as he elevated his game. I focused on staying strong and not getting broken at the start of the third set,” Tien shared during his on-court interview. “I’m really pleased with how I boosted my energy and overall performance in that final set.”
Next, he will face Roman Andres Burruchaga, who triumphed over Brandon Nakashima with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Second seed Frances Tiafoe kicked off his Houston run with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win against Australian Rinky Hijikata. With NBA superstar Kevin Durant in the crowd, the 2023 champion displayed his exceptional shot-making skills during a thrilling two-hour and twenty-eight-minute match.
Returning to clay for the first time since reaching the Roland Garros quarter-finals last year, Tiafoe has reached the Houston quarter-finals for the fifth consecutive year.
“My first match on clay felt a bit amusing; I was still trying to adapt from hard court. It’s a good experience to get a couple of hours on the court. I’m glad to move forward and aim for an even better performance tomorrow,” Tiafoe remarked.
The 28-year-old Tiafoe boasts a perfect 14-0 record this season after winning the first set.
