Bianca Andreescu finally broke her lengthy winning drought on Tuesday.

In a thrilling first round at the Charleston Open, a WTA 250 clay-court tournament, the Canadian star claimed her first WTA main-draw victory since July, overcoming world No. 84 Dalma Galfi of Hungary with a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Currently ranked No. 140, Andreescu has primarily competed in lower-tier events this year, aiming to reclaim her former glory from 2019 when she triumphed at the U.S. Open and reached No. 4 in the world.

Earlier this year, Andreescu faced Galfi in a tough three-set match in Austin, Texas. Her last main-draw victory was at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Montreal last year, after which she sustained an ankle injury that kept her from progressing to the second round.

The 25-year-old has demonstrated resilience, achieving a commendable 19-5 win-loss record this season while rebuilding her game on the lower circuit.

Starting the year ranked No. 228, Andreescu reflected on her journey, stating, “I wanted to make a return in 2024 after my nine-month break, but my ego got in the way. It was time to set that aside and focus on gaining match experience, which has been crucial for me.”

She noted the fierce competition on the ITF circuit, saying, “The players there are really fighting to make a name for themselves. On the WTA Tour, you find more comfort and benefits, which can make it easier mentally, but the ITF tour is where the true grit shows — it’s a do-or-die environment.”

Andreescu expressed satisfaction with her performance against Galfi, stating, “At the end of the day, giving my best effort is what truly matters. I felt I did that, and that’s what I focus on with my coach every day. Whether I win or lose, if I commit to those principles, I can feel proud of my effort.”

Next up, Andreescu will face the No. 16 seed, Sofia Kenin from the U.S.
