Mackenzie McDonald brought an end to Jenson Brooksby’s title defense at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship on Monday, winning decisively 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round.
In a match lasting just one hour and 19 minutes, the American secured his first clay-court victory since outlasting Daniel Elahi Galan in Houston last year.
“I’m proud of how I kicked off this clay season,” McDonald expressed. “I put in a lot of effort over the past two weeks, and it’s gratifying to see that pay off on the court.”
Brooksby, who emerged from qualifying to claim the title in 2025 and saved match points in three of his seven previous matches, couldn’t summon the same magic this year, as McDonald delivered a stellar performance.
McDonald impressively denied all four break points he faced, leveraging Brooksby’s 30 unforced errors. This victory marks the first Top-50 win for the 30-year-old since defeating No. 42 Gael Monfils at Queen’s Club last June.
Next up for McDonald in this clay-court ATP 250 event in Houston is a second-round match against either fellow American Colton Smith or Thiago Agustin Tirante.
In other opening-round action, wild card Zhang Zhizhen set up a mouth-watering second-round clash with top seed Ben Shelton after a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over British qualifier Jack Pinnington Jones. This 63-minute match marked Zhang’s first clay court victory since his quarter-finals run in Hamburg in 2024.

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo advanced as well, defeating American Zachary Svajda 6-1, 6-4, making him the first Paraguayan to secure multiple ATP Tour wins in a season since Ramon Delgado in 2006. The 21-year-old will face fourth seed Tommy Paul next.
Alex Bolt and Thiago Agustin Tirante also triumphed in their first-round matches. Bolt edged past Yibing Wu with a score of 7-6(6), 6-2 and will meet either fifth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry or Federico Agustin Gomez next. Meanwhile, Tirante cruised to victory over Colton Smith with a stellar 6-0, 6-3 performance.
