Jiri Lehecka has a lot to celebrate after his unexpected run to the final of the Miami Open presented by Itau. Despite falling short against Jannik Sinner in the ultimate showdown, this Czech sensation highlighted his relentless drive for growth and progress.

“Matches like today against elite players reveal just how much more there is for me to achieve,” Lehecka remarked in his post-match interview. “I feel I played exceptionally well throughout the tournament and am quite pleased with my performance.”

“However, today proved that I have more work to do. If I aim to compete with the best in major events like Masters and Grand Slams, I need to continuously elevate my game,” he added.

Lehecka is set to reach a new career-high ranking of No. 14 in the upcoming PIF ATP Rankings after showcasing an impressive serving display in Miami, going unbroken until the final match. He expertly saved nine break points across three matches and faced none in the other two matches leading to the championship. However, Sinner quickly disrupted Lehecka’s momentum, breaking him in the Czech’s second service game.

Despite this, the 24-year-old Lehecka feels a sense of achievement with his exceptional serving in South Florida.

“I worked hard in recent weeks to keep my key strengths operating effectively throughout these matches,” said Lehecka. “Of course, I dream of holding my serve all year long, but I know that’s unrealistic. Jannik put immense pressure on me throughout the match.”

With this latest performance, Lehecka has now faced Sinner four times in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, but Sunday’s match showcased a more competitive display than their previous encounter in the third round of Roland Garros last year, where Sinner dominated with a swift 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 victory. That three-set match lasted just one minute longer than Sinner’s two-set triumph at Hard Rock Stadium.

“I think I delivered a better performance today compared to Paris, focusing on avoiding past mistakes,” Lehecka stated. “Using my first serve more effectively and approaching the net played a crucial role.”

Reflecting on the conditions at last year’s Roland Garros, he said, “The environment was incredibly challenging for my style. We played under a roof with damp conditions and heavy balls, which benefited him immensely. He had ample time to respond to my shots.”

With a modest 6-5 record at the season’s start, Lehecka now heads into the European clay-court season feeling invigorated by his recent successes.

“Reaching the final here gives me a confidence boost as I prepare for the Monte-Carlo clay. There’s truly no better way to kick off the clay season than in Monte-Carlo, a place I adore and always look forward to visiting,” Lehecka said with enthusiasm.
