In a jaw-dropping display, Arthur Fils battled back to save four match points, stunning American Tommy Paul at the Miami Open presented by Itau.
In what could be dubbed ‘match of the season’, the 21-year-old triumphed 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 7-6(6), dashing the hopes of the home crowd and securing his place in the ATP Masters 1000 semi-finals for the first time. Throughout the marathon match lasting almost three hours, Fils showcased remarkable resolve, winning six straight points from 2-6 down in the deciding-set tie-break.
“It was an intense battle, and I never shy away from a fight,” Fils stated in his post-match interview. “Even if I had lost, I gave it my all.”

Seeded 28th, Fils showcased relentless aggression throughout the evening, progressively hitting the ball with increasing intensity. Prior to this match, Fils had faced a difficult 0-4 record in ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals, including a recent setback in Indian Wells. By advancing to the semi-finals, he now stands as the youngest French ATP Masters 1000 semi-finalist since Richard Gasquet at age 21 in 2007.
“This is the best result I’ve achieved in my career so far,” Fils expressed. “While I’ll aim to do my best in the semi-finals, I’m just thrilled right now.”
In the first set, Paul dropped only one point on his first serve and maintained a flawless baseline display. Fils’ early fervor turned against him in critical moments, particularly during the first-set tie-break where unforced errors swung the momentum to Paul.
Fils found his rhythm again in the second set, unleashing powerful forehands and engaging Paul in exhilarating rallies. The American claimed a tiring 29-shot point in the third game of the decider, seemingly regaining control of the match.
Despite being a three-time ATP Tour champion, Fils struggled to create break opportunities until the 6-5 mark in the decider—his first match point. Unfortunately, a misfired running forehand cost him that chance.
Then the drama unfolded. Facing a 2-6 deficit in the final-set tie-break, Fils displayed extraordinary athleticism and shot-making prowess. Paul had two match points at 6-3 and 6-4, but faltered, allowing Fils back into the contest after a remarkable rally that ended with a forehand error from Paul.

Next up for Fils is the 21st seed Jiri Lehecka, a match in which Fils leads their head-to-head series 2-1. Their last encounter was in the Doha quarter-finals last month, where Fils emerged victorious with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
