After a nail-biting victory against defending champion Jakub Mensik on Monday, Frances Tiafoe faced another tense moment on Tuesday night at the Miami Open presented by Itau. He found himself at 0/40 while tied at 4-4 in the final set against Terence Atmane.
Yet again, by staying in the moment, the American powered through and ultimately secured a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 triumph, marking his fifth ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final appearance and his first since Cincinnati in 2024.
“I focused on being comfortable with discomfort, putting myself in those challenging situations intentionally,” Tiafoe shared about his crucial escape. “It’s like running sprints—you’re not fixating on the number left, just the next one ahead. When I was down 0/40, I concentrated on that, then 15/40, and so on. Just stay grounded.”
This victory sets up an electrifying quarter-final showdown against Jannik Sinner on home turf, where Tiafoe trails their head-to-head record 1-4.
Although Tiafoe wasn’t entirely satisfied with his performance against Atmane, he’s aware he’ll need to elevate his game against the World No. 2. “Emotionally, I was drained from yesterday,” he admitted. “Physically, I’m solid, but it was more about the emotional toll… but winning is what matters.”
Closing out the day’s matches, Alexander Zverev defeated Quentin Halys with a score of 7-6(4), 7-6(1). The 2018 Miami finalist has now reached the quarter-finals or better in six of his last seven ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, making it to the quarters in both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season for the second time (2024).
Victorious against the No. 111 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Zverev extended his winning streak against players outside the Top 100 to 16 matches, a streak going strong since 2024.
For the second time in this Miami campaign, Zverev won without facing a single break point: “My serve is working wonders, and I’m optimistic it will continue,” he remarked after unleashing 16 aces, as noted by Infosys ATP Stats. “Today, we both served exceptionally well. I didn’t have too many break opportunities.”

The German generated six break opportunities on return—four at 5-5 in the opening set and two match points at 5-4 in the second. Although he couldn’t convert against Halys’ potent serve, he made up for it by seizing early leads in both tie-breaks.
Zverev’s next challenge is Francisco Cerundolo, who reached his fourth Miami quarter-final in five attempts with a commanding 6-4, 6-3 victory against Ugo Humbert.
