If recent trends are anything to go by, Carlos Alcaraz’s exit from the Miami Open might ignite another exceptional clay-court streak.

The reigning No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings suffered an early exit in Miami for the second consecutive year, this time bowing out to Sebastian Korda. Last year, a surprising first-round defeat to David Goffin in South Florida paved the way for an impressive 22-1 run on clay. Following his 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 loss to Korda, Alcaraz turned his focus to the future.

“I’m looking forward to going home, relaxing with my family and friends for a few days. I’m not sure how much rest my team will allow,” Alcaraz expressed. “Soon enough, I’ll need to get back on track and hit the court. The clay season is approaching, and I’m excited about the tournaments ahead. My goal is to reset my mind, recharge, and prepare myself for the next challenges.”

Having started the 2026 season with an immaculate 16-0 record, Alcaraz has now faced setbacks in two of his last three matches, including a semi-final loss to Daniil Medvedev in Indian Wells. However, he remains upbeat, acknowledging Korda’s exceptional performance.

Korda, a three-time ATP Tour champion and former World No. 15, displayed near-perfect tennis until a brief lapse while serving out the match at 5-4 in the second set. While Alcaraz attempted a comeback, he ultimately fell short, crediting Korda’s performance and recognizing his own struggles to dominate the match.

“Fortunately, I possess numerous tools to keep my opponents unsettled, yet today I couldn’t quite utilize them,” Alcaraz reflected on facing opponents who elevate their game. “Moving forward, I’m aware that they’ll continue to perform at that level. I need to be prepared.”

“Even though Korda performed exceptionally well, I was present during key moments—lots of 30/30s and Deuces, along with break points against me. I couldn’t capitalize on them. I plan to analyze those situations and ensure I seize those crucial points in future matches. I intend to push my opponents to their limits.”

This outcome also holds significance for the ongoing rivalry atop the PIF ATP Rankings, particularly against Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz’s earlier-than-expected exit opens the field for Sinner to narrow the point gap, especially with Sinner having favorable opportunities deep into the tournament.

While Alcaraz has critical points to defend during the clay swing, Sinner faces comparatively fewer pressures, tightening the competition for the top spot. The upcoming Masters 1000 events will play a crucial role in this face-off, with momentum likely to shift rapidly based on performances.

Alcaraz acknowledged that this dynamic adds a layer of pressure to his opponents. “When you’re winning tournaments and maintaining a great win/loss ratio, I sense that my rivals feel they have more to gain than lose,” he mentioned when discussing the pressure situation. “This dynamic contributes to a lack of pressure on them during matches, which is the impression I get after competing.”

Alcaraz exits Miami with a commendable 17-2 record in 2026, based on the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, and his next challenge is the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. As the reigning champion at this inaugural clay-court Masters 1000 event, he seeks to replicate last year’s dominant run, which also included titles in Rome and Roland Garros.
