During last week’s BNP Paribas Open, World No. 2 Jannik Sinner narrowly edged 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca in what marked their first encounter in the Lexus ATP Head2Head series. Sinner saved three set points and triumphed in two tie-breaks at Indian Wells.

Among the keen observers was World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who noted the impressive play from Fonseca.

“When someone goes toe-to-toe with Jannik, it means they’re playing exceptional tennis,” Alcaraz remarked about Fonseca after the match. “I couldn’t catch the entire match, but I saw glimpses of Joao’s brilliance. It’s fantastic to see him competing at such a high level.”

Alcaraz forecasts a bright future for Fonseca, and soon he’ll have the chance to test that prediction firsthand. This Friday night at the Miami Open presented by Itau, the World No. 1 is set to face Fonseca in a match brimming with excitement.

Although this will be their debut meeting on tour, they aren’t total strangers. The two trained together at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals, where Fonseca played the role of a sparring partner, and they also hit together at Wimbledon last summer.

At just 19, Alcaraz has already snatched a US Open title, claimed the World No. 1 spot, and captured two ATP Masters 1000 titles. Meanwhile, Fonseca is building his portfolio, with titles at both ATP 250 and 500 events, capturing the attention of fans and analysts alike.

With an electrifying atmosphere on Stadium Court, the Brazilian is poised to make a statement and potentially deliver an upset against the top seed in what promises to be a thrilling second-round clash, set to commence at 7 p.m. local time.
